The Town of Perth, in collaboration with its curbside collection contractor, will be kicking off a waste management blitz beginning Thursday, Nov. 16, to guide residents and address a growing trend where volumes of waste and types of materials are being placed at the curb that don’t meet the Perth waste program.
The Perth waste program provides curbside collection of bagged household waste and green bins under 50 lb, along with recycling collection. In an effort to hinder instances that don’t meet the requirements of the program, refusal tags may be issued in the following cases;
- Garbage bags are not tagged;
- Bins and bags weigh over 50 lb;
- Recyclables are not separated appropriately;
- Yard waste is put out (exceptions for leaf and Christmas trees on prescribed pick-up weeks); and
- Hazardous waste is put out.
“Residents can bring oversized and overweight items, including construction materials, directly to the Perth Landfill during operating hours,” states Grant Machan, Director of Environmental Services. “Yard waste can also be brought to the Landfill year-round.”
Residents are reminded that the annual allotment of garbage tags can be picked up at Town Hall during regular operating hours, and additional tags are available for purchase, if needed. Details regarding what items can be recycled and what is considered organic waste can be found in the 2023 Curbside Chronicles, which is available at Perth.ca/Garbage. Physical copies are available for pick up at Town Hall. The annual leaf collecting will be taking place from November 13-17. Paper bags must be put out by 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 and contain only leaves. Brush and plastic bags will not be collected. Christmas tree collection will take place from Jan. 15-19, 2024.
