Smiths Falls sets Sept. 6 date for replacement fireworks

Smiths Falls residents will get another chance to see the Canada Day fireworks display that went ahead unexpectedly after being cancelled.

A replacement show will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, at Lower Reach Park during the Labour Day long weekend.

Director of Corporate Services and Treasurer Paul Dowber announced the date during the July 27 committee of the whole meeting. He credited community services staff with negotiating with the fireworks provider and securing a date that aligned with council’s direction.

The original display was cancelled July 1 because of severe weather and concerns for public safety. Many spectators had already left the area when the fireworks proceeded unexpectedly, causing confusion and disappointment.

The town later held discussions with the provider, which expressed regret and agreed to return for a replacement display at no additional cost to the municipality.

Dowber said further details about the Sept. 6 show will be released closer to the date.
