Construction on track at CHIP Halton Street project in Perth

PERTH — Construction is progressing steadily at the Community Housing Initiative Perth (CHIP) affordable housing development at 63 Halton St., with no delays reported as work continues through spring.

Crews from Saumure Construction worked through the winter months to keep the 15-unit build on schedule, pushing ahead despite cold temperatures and snow.

The structure is now fully framed, with the building envelope enclosed following installation of the roof, windows and doors. Interior work has advanced to include framing, with plumbing and electrical installations completed. Insulation is currently being installed, and individual electric heat pumps have been added to provide heating and cooling for each unit.

Site Supervisor Jim Blackburn said the project moved forward after crews addressed challenging site conditions last fall, including the removal of hard bedrock. Neighbours were thanked for their patience during that phase of construction.

The building uses a slab-on-grade foundation, designed for durability and energy efficiency.

The $4.6-million development is a partnership between CHIP and Carebridge Community Support, a non-profit organization that operates affordable housing across Lanark County.

The Halton Street project will include a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, with several accessible units located on the ground floor.

Fundraising campaign reaches halfway point

CHIP has also updated its website, perthhousing.ca, as part of an ongoing $300,000 fundraising campaign tied to the project.

Co-chair Claire Smith said $150,000 remains to be raised ahead of the anticipated fall occupancy.

“We’re halfway there, but $150,000 is still needed to complete construction,” Smith said. “With occupancy expected this fall, the community’s generosity will give 15 local families in need a place to call home.”

Co-chair David Kroetsch said the progress on site is helping bring the vision into focus.

“I can now envision new members of our community moving in and starting their lives in safe and affordable housing,” he said.
