Ramsey Hart and Bonita Ford brought their concerns about the Perth Golf Course development by CAIVAN to town council during a regular committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Representing Perth Citizens for Responsible Development, they urged the town to maintain a strong position in the Ontario Land Tribunal mediation and hearing, emphasizing the need to protect planning policies, natural heritage, and quality of life.

The group called for transparency and open dialogue between the town and its residents, encouraging regular updates to be posted on the town’s website. They also outlined key concerns regarding the development.

They requested that a northern access point be prioritized for construction and residential traffic. They also asked that the project not exceed 650 units, as outlined in the town’s infrastructure master plan, with 25 per cent of the development designated as affordable housing. They stressed the importance of protecting wetlands and wildlife, ensuring they are monitored throughout construction.

Another concern was the 100-year-flood zone, where the current development plan proposes 99 lots and some stormwater management blocks. The group stated that no development should occur in this area. They also advocated for the front nine holes of the golf course to remain as a golf course or open green space.

Council acknowledged the concerns but, due to the ongoing Ontario Land Tribunal hearing, is legally restricted from discussing the matter publicly.

Coun. Jim Boldt assured residents their concerns align with the town’s.

“I feel just as strongly as you about many of the issues,” he said.

Coun. Isabel Anne McRae commended the group’s dedication.

“Together, your efforts and our efforts can make all the difference.”

Council agreed to receive the report for information and encouraged continued engagement on the issue.
