Crow Lake Road speed limit applies between Frontenac boundary and Bolingbroke
TAY VALLEY TOWNSHIP — Tay Valley council has approved a new posted speed limit for a section of Crow Lake Road following a review prompted by a driveway entrance application.
At its March 3 meeting, council supported a recommendation to post a 60 km/h speed limit on Crow Lake Road between the Frontenac boundary and Bolingbroke Station Road. The change will require an amendment to the township’s Maximum Rate of Speed bylaw. It was passed formally on March 24 during a regular council meeting.
The section of road was previously unposted, meaning the default speed limit under the Highway Traffic Act was 80 km/h.
Staff reviewed the speed limit after receiving an entrance permit application for a property near the Frontenac boundary. According to the report, a large rock cut along the roadside limits where a driveway could be located, and required sightlines could only be met if the road had a posted speed limit of 60 km/h.
Crow Lake Road is approximately 2.5 kilometres long along that stretch and includes hills, curves and straight sections where speeds tend to increase.
Traffic data collected in 2025 showed an average daily traffic count of about 560 vehicles. The average speed was recorded at 80 km/h, while 85 per cent of drivers were travelling at about 92 km/h.
Using the Transportation Association of Canada’s automated speed limit guideline, staff calculated a risk score of 26 for the roadway based on factors such as road geometry, lane width, roadside hazards and intersections. That score supports a recommended posted speed of 60 km/h.
Township staff noted the change will also help provide a more gradual speed transition into the existing 40 km/h zone in the hamlet of Bolingbroke.
The cost of installing the required speed limit signs is estimated at about $500 and will be funded through the township’s traffic control budget.
