Lanark County Food Bank prepares to relocate to 115 Industrial Ave. as demand continues to grow

CARLETON PLACEThe Hunger Stop (Lanark County Food Bank) has moved several times over its 35-plus years and is now preparing for one more move, this time to a permanent location at 115 Industrial Ave.

“We recognize that, as much as we’d like to, we’re not going out of business. Food insecurity continues to rise, and our forever home offers a significant advancement in delivering dependable support,” said Liz Glover, LCFB chair.

“The board spent the last year searching for the right place to purchase, and we are pleased to announce our forever home will be 115 Industrial Ave. in Carleton Place. The location will enable us to meet our community’s growing needs. Having just taken possession, we are looking forward to retrofitting the building to meet our operational needs and planning the big move. We are all very excited and hope to move into our new home by the fall.”

“We currently serve more than 1,800 people per month in our community, a significant increase from 500 per month just five years ago,” said Tammy Parent, LCFB manager. “Operational efficiency is paramount to the smooth flow of clients, and our new building will be well organized and functional.”

Of the 1,800 people served each month, 40 per cent are children. Clients come from a 770-square-kilometre area, ranging from White Lake to Franktown, and Ashton to Innisville, including the communities of Almonte, Pakenham, Carleton Place, Clayton and the Township of Beckwith.

The Hunger Stop also provides a delivery service to families who are unable to shop for themselves or do not have access to transportation.

Established in 1988, The Hunger Stop is operated by a volunteer board of directors, a full-time and part-time manager, and approximately 180 volunteers who provide front-line service to clients, maintain the food bank gardens and support the infrastructure that keeps the operation running.
