Community donations help Lanark County Interval House create stability for families in need

Lanark County Interval House and Community Support is preparing for another busy holiday season as more women and children seek emergency shelter during what can be the most difficult time of the year.

In an email update, resource development lead Cathie McOrmond said the shelter remains open through the holidays with staff on duty around the clock. Workers and volunteers spend extra time creating a festive and comforting atmosphere for families staying in the emergency shelter.

McOrmond said many residents feel especially vulnerable at this time of year. Emotional pressures are higher, and the season can amplify loneliness, fear and isolation for those fleeing violent situations. As a result, demand for safe shelter often rises in December.

Staff focus on helping women feel safe and supported while giving children a chance to experience some holiday joy, even in the midst of crisis. McOrmond said the team works to make sure every resident feels “safe, hopeful and cherished.”

The community traditionally rallies around the shelter during the festive season. Residents, businesses and service groups contribute through monetary gifts and in-kind donations to help families rebuild stability.

Lanark County Interval House welcomes general cash donations year-round. Supporters can donate online through CanadaHelps and receive an immediate tax receipt. E-transfers can be sent to finance@lcih.com
