Lanark County youth services collaborative brings together more than 40 agencies serving children, youth and families
PERTH — Perth town council heard a call to strengthen support for young people during a delegation presentation at its March 10 committee of the whole meeting.
Sharon Halladay spoke to council about the work of the Lanark County Child and Youth Services Collaborative and the role municipalities can play in helping youth thrive in their communities.
A retired principal from Rideau District High School, Halladay said the collaborative brings together more than 40 agencies serving children, youth and families across Lanark County. The group meets monthly to share information, co-ordinate services and avoid duplication in the region’s rural communities.
Halladay also highlighted a new Municipal Toolkit that encourages local governments to consider youth in community planning. The toolkit suggests strategies such as giving youth a voice, recognizing youth achievements, creating opportunities for connection and strengthening relationships between youth and adults.
She also urged council to promote nominations for the county’s Developmental Assets Awards, which recognize adults who make a positive impact in young people’s lives.
“There are probably great developmental asset builders in your community. So I’d ask that in April, when we send out the registration form, that you consider those people because often they’re not doing it for the glory or the cookie,” said Halladay.
She added that small gestures, such as a friendly greeting or a supportive mentor, can make a lasting difference in a young person’s confidence and well-being.
Halladay has been presenting to local councils to update members on the initiative.
