Lanark Lodge café renovation gets committee support

A new café could be serving residents and visitors at Lanark Lodge by Christmas after Lanark County’s Community Services Committee supported spending up to $65,000 to renovate the long-term care home’s existing Tuck Shop.

The project would be funded through the Resident Donation Account, which currently has a balance of about $183,000, with no impact on the Lanark Lodge operating budget.

The café will be operated by Jazzy’s, a Perth café owned by Kelsey Dold, following an expression of interest issued by the county in June.

Jazzy’s plans to operate seven days a week, offering beverages, baked goods, grab-and-go meals, soups, sandwiches and snacks. Food will be prepared off-site in the business’s health unit-certified kitchen.

The existing volunteer-run Tuck Shop will continue operating from a temporary location during renovations and will share space with the café once the project is complete.

County staff said the project responds to resident and family surveys that have identified a desire for improved café services and gathering space.

The local health unit has reviewed the proposed café and renovation plans. The county hopes to have the new café operating by Christmas.
