Adelaide and McDermott site under review for Mississippi Mills affordable housing plans

ALMONTE — Lanark Community Alliance and the Municipality of Mississippi Mills have renewed their partnership to explore affordable housing opportunities as demand continues to grow across the region.

Council has approved a four-year memorandum of understanding with the alliance to examine the potential development of affordable housing on municipally owned land at the southeast corner of Adelaide and McDermott streets.

The agreement outlines a shared effort to increase access to safe and stable housing for residents, including seniors, families and individuals.

“Affordable housing is about more than buildings. It’s about people, stability and the ability to belong,” said Robert Eves, CEO of Lanark Community Alliance. “We’re proud to continue working alongside Mississippi Mills to explore opportunities that can make a lasting difference in this community.”

The partnership builds on earlier work between the two organizations, including a 2022 agreement tied to a proposed development at 34 Victoria St. Since then, the municipality has proceeded with construction of a new Mississippi Mills Childcare Services facility on part of that site.

As plans evolved, the proposed housing location shifted. The alliance and the municipality are now focusing on the Adelaide and McDermott site while continuing to review funding options and next steps.

Mayor Christa Lowry said the renewed agreement reflects the importance of collaboration in addressing local housing needs.

“By working with organizations like Lanark Community Alliance, we are making progress to address housing challenges in Mississippi Mills,” she said. “This agreement shows how municipal land can be used to help create housing while preparing for future funding opportunities.”

The project remains in the feasibility and planning stage. A zoning amendment meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 6 p.m., with additional opportunities for public input expected as planning continues.
