Mississippi Mills council approved heritage designations for three buildings and authorized borrowing for equipment and infrastructure projects at its first meeting following the summer break.
Three buildings receive heritage designation
Council approved bylaws recognizing the following buildings under the Ontario Heritage Act for their cultural and historical importance:
- Snedden House, 198 Church St., was built in 1866 by William Snedden at the corner of Country and Church streets in Almonte. It is considered a good example of an Ontario cottage.
- Teskey House, 492 River Rd., is an example of Georgian Classical architecture. The original house was built in 1837, with an addition constructed in 1844. It overlooks the original site of Joseph Teskey’s grist mill in Appleton.
- Black Watch Building, 34 Mill St., was built in 1909-10 and is an example of early 20th-century commercial architecture. It contributes to the character of Almonte’s historic downtown.
Borrowing approved for equipment and infrastructure
Council approved borrowing to pay for equipment and infrastructure projects purchased or completed in 2025, including:
- A Volvo loader and plow truck: $693,899.25
- New compressors at the Stewart Community Centre in Pakenham: $47,040
- The Mercer-Marshall storm sewer and culvert, renewal of the Concession 8 Bridge and a new pedestrian crossing on the Blakeney Bridge: $1,939,389.91
- Water and sanitary sewer upgrades on Union Street North and Mercer-Marshall, as well as a new watermain on Carss Street: $1,826,473.86
Committee recommendations move forward
The committee of the whole also discussed several items that will be brought forward for approval at a future council meeting.
These include an updated Reserve and Reserve Funds Policy governing how the municipality manages money set aside for future needs and projects, and a recommendation to make the Mississippi Mills Fire Department strategic co-ordinator position permanent and full time.
Council also received quarterly reports from the clerk’s department, corporate services and childcare services.
Upcoming meetings
The next hybrid council meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m., followed by the committee of the whole.
Another hybrid council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m., also followed by the committee of the whole.
