Public consultation is next as Mississippi Mills council advances its climate action plan
MISSISSIPPI MILLS — Mississippi Mills council moved several policy and infrastructure items forward during its May 5 meeting, including the next phase of the municipality’s climate action plan and a review of rural road operations.
Council approved Part A of the municipality’s Climate Action Plan, which includes a greenhouse gas emissions inventory identifying municipal buildings and the wastewater treatment plant as major sources of energy use. Staff were also directed to proceed with Part B of the project, which will include public consultation, emissions reduction targets and implementation planning.
Earlier in the meeting, council held a public session regarding a proposed zoning amendment for 3122 11th Concession Pakenham. The amendment would prohibit future residential development on the farmland to preserve agricultural use. A bylaw is expected to come forward at a future meeting.
Council also proclaimed May as Jewish Heritage Month, recognizing the contributions of Jewish Canadians in business, politics, arts, science and medicine, while reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to inclusion and opposition to antisemitism and hate. Council supported a similar resolution previously passed by Lanark County.
Committee of the whole discussed several additional items that will return to council for approval at a future meeting, including a Roads and Public Works service delivery review, a proposed gravel road needs study and a one-year pilot project to address building permit fee disputes.
Council also received a notice of motion from Coun. Denzil Ferguson requesting a review of the municipality’s sign bylaw, particularly regulations surrounding digital signs, along with quarterly departmental reports from Roads and Public Works and Development Services and Engineering.
