MISSISSIPPI MILLS — Residents are being urged to stay alert as a flood watch remains in effect across the Mississippi River watershed, with rising water levels driven by recent rain and ongoing snowmelt.
According to the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority, water levels and flows are elevated across the system and continue to rise along the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
The combination of mild temperatures, rainfall and remaining snowpack in the upper watershed is accelerating runoff, while saturated ground conditions are limiting absorption and increasing the risk of localized flooding.
The municipality of Mississippi Mills is directing residents to monitor conditions closely, particularly those in flood-prone areas. Officials warn that fast-moving water, slippery banks and unstable ice can pose serious safety risks.
Localized impacts could include ponding on roads and properties, as well as potential ice jams along rivers and creeks.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions such as checking sump pumps, clearing drainage areas and securing outdoor items that could be affected by rising water.
Sandbags and additional flood preparedness resources are available through the municipality, with updates posted regularly on its website.
The conservation authority defines a flood watch as a condition where flooding is possible and residents should be prepared to respond if conditions worsen.
Updates on water levels and flood status are available through the conservation authority’s website.
