Election sign changes, community reminders and other Montague council updates from the March 3 meeting

MONTAGUE — Montague council dealt with several routine matters at its March 3 meeting, including moving ahead with a change to election sign rules, approving updated municipal user fees and sharing reminders about interim tax bills, spring road restrictions and an upcoming community event.

Election sign bylaw change

Montague Township is moving ahead with changes to its election sign rules ahead of the 2026 municipal election.

Council supported a recommendation to amend the township’s election sign bylaw so campaign signs would not be permitted until 2 p.m. on nomination day.

Under the proposed change, signs could be posted beginning Aug. 21 during the 2026 municipal election cycle.

The recommendation was approved. The bylaw amendment will return to council for formal approval at its March 17 meeting.

Municipal elections across Ontario are scheduled for Oct. 26, 2026.

User fees

Council has approved an updated schedule of municipal user fees and service charges, with the new rates set to take effect May 1.

Council adopted the revised fee bylaw during its meeting, updating costs associated with a range of municipal services including licensing, facility rentals, waste management and planning applications.

Among the fees listed in the updated schedule:

  • Garbage tags will remain $6 each.
  • Dog tags will cost $15 if purchased before March 31 and $30 after that date.
  • Refreshment vehicle licences are set at $150.
  • Campground licences are listed at $100.

The bylaw also includes fees related to hall rentals, building permits, septic permits and fire department response charges.

Municipalities typically review fee schedules periodically to ensure service costs are recovered and rates remain current.

Interim tax bills

Interim tax bills have been issued, with the first installment due March 31.

Residents who have not received their tax bill by regular mail or email by March 13 are asked to contact the township office.

Half loads in effect

Spring weight restrictions are being posted on some township roads.

Reeve Karen Jennings said the half-load signs are necessary to protect roads during the spring thaw, when they are more vulnerable to damage.

Questions can be directed to the township’s public works department.

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny

Families can enjoy Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at Rosedale Hall on March 28 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The event includes face painting, a balloon artist, crafts and photos with the Easter Bunny. Council will prepare the pancake breakfast.

Admission is $7, or $5 for children 12 and under.
