SMITHS FALLS — Council has approved the appointment of a new Smiths Falls bylaw enforcement officer as the town expands its enforcement capacity.

At its April 27 committee of the whole meeting, council supported a recommendation to appoint Travis Hendrick to the role following a recent recruitment process.

The position was approved as part of the town’s 2026 budget and marks the addition of a third bylaw officer.

According to a report from Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough, bylaw enforcement officers are responsible for enforcing a range of municipal regulations, including parking, property standards, animal control, safe yards and smoking bylaws, as well as winter parking rules.

The new role is based on a 35-hour work week, with weekday coverage and on-call availability on weekends for animal control-related calls.

Council passed a bylaw formalizing the appointment on May 4.
