Heart-breaking loss for Split Decisions

It took a tiebreaker to crown the winner at the annual Friends of the Library trivia afternoon on Sunday in Smiths Falls.

The Legion was packed, two extra tables were added (for a total of 22) and at the end of the game, both The COGS (Rotarians) and The Split Decisions (the boxers) pulled together 75 of a possible 100 points. As the other teams left, the tied winners settled down to a quick four-question head-scratcher — and The COGS took it by one answer.

Larry Allen, one member of The COGS, said they now have “something to fear” next year i.e. the steamroller Split Decisions. The COGS team included Jason Anderson, Hugh McLean, John McLean, Ken Graham, Doug Hazen, Larry Allen, Sarah McLean Knapp and Mary Anderson.

The Split Decisions, a boxing group, included Lois and Stan Strickland, Gord and Marlene Rutherford, Gayle Truman and Jim Phillips, Robert Fisher and Pat Evans, Robin Rensby, and the youngster of the team, Blair Kerr.

Karen Schecter, Head Librarian, added musical clips to the challenge this year and Friends of the Library member Terry Watkiss (the Library’s resident DJ) pulled the 10-second snippets together.

The ladies of the Legion performed their usual magic with a tasty mid-afternoon lunch of sandwiches, veggies and desserts. The Legion also presented a $500 cheque to the Library, and Schecter reckons the total going towards Library programs is close to $2,500. David Hoffman, at the last moment, filled in admirably on the mic.

Keep tuned for a February date in 2021 for the next Friends of the Library trivia afternoon, and assemble your team sooner rather than later; the tables go fast.
