Two people missing after falling through the ice

SUBMITTED

Members of Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating a missing person incident where three individuals broke through the ice on Charleston Lake.

On February 11, 2024, shortly before 5:00 p.m., three individuals broke through the ice while fishing on Charleston Lake. One person self-extricated themselves from the freezing waters just north of Lansdowne, Ontario, while two people are still outstanding.

The Emergency Response Team (ERT), Aviation Services, Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Leeds and Thousand Islands Fire Department (TLTI) and Rideau Lakes Fire Department are continuing to search for the missing individuals.

The OPP urges the public to stay off the ice. No ice is safe ice, especially during this extraordinarily mild winter.

If you have any information pertaining to the missing persons, please contact the OPP non-emergency line at 1 (888) 310-1122.
