‘Most derogatory email’: Perth Mayor Judy Brown counters with kindness in her council update

LAURIE WEIR

During a regular meeting of Perth town council on March 19, Mayor Judy Brown was thoughtful with her update to council.

Each member of council has a chance to share with members, their interactions since they last met.

Brown has in her office, a visitor guest book, and one note from the late 1980s struck home. It was a message from a woman from Los Angeles, who wrote, “The community of Perth is sincerely warm and friendly. The hospitality shown to a visitor is enough to tempt me to move here permanently.”

Brown said the reason that struck her is that she can sense a “change in the tone around town.” She said she’s not sure why – maybe since COVID. “There are some issues and changes, and of course people are going to have thoughts about it.”

Brown said some of the negativity “goes a bit overboard.”

Last week she received an email from “someone, that was the most derogatory I’ve had in politics in 30 years,” she said.

She wanted to share a note she read on the wall at the bank, to counter the negativity.

“You’ve got to look for the good in the bad, the happy in the sad, the gain in your pain and what makes you grateful, not hateful.”
