Honouring the past, igniting the future: Carleton Place Fire Department celebrates 150 years

The Carleton Place Fire Department is celebrating a major milestone this year — 150 years of dedicated service — making it one of the oldest departments in Lanark County.

To mark the occasion, the department is inviting the public to a free community barbecue on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire hall on Coleman Street.

While the department was officially established in 1875, its roots go back even further. In 1868, the town acquired a hand-pumped fire engine that required a crew of 40 men to operate — a testament to early firefighting efforts in the region.

A highlight of the event will be the display of a fully restored 1923 Red Speedwagon fire truck, alongside a collection of historical memorabilia.

“We’ll have a history display, and some of our retired firefighters will be in attendance,” said acting fire Chief Dave Joy.

The celebration will include something for all ages: modern fire truck displays, interactive demos, games, hands-on learning activities, and a chance to meet both current and retired firefighters. Those interested in a career in fire services are especially encouraged to attend and learn more.

“There will be events for the children, a history exhibit, and of course, a free barbecue,” Joy added.

All are welcome to join in the celebration, honour the department’s past, and enjoy a day of fun and community spirit.
