Smiths Falls Bears edge Hawkesbury Hawks in shootout

The Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears needed a shootout to secure a 3-2 win over the Hawkesbury Hawks in Central Canada Hockey League action Sunday afternoon.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period with goals from Chris Cardillo and Marc-Antoine Riopel. D.J. Ott assisted on both markers, while Pelton Veltkamp and Jack Paquette also added helpers.

Hawkesbury responded in the second, tying the game with goals from Jacob Skyoczylas and Théodore Jetté.

Neither team found the back of the net in the third period or overtime, sending the game to a shootout. Quinn Booth, Riopel and Parker all scored for Smiths Falls, while Jetté had the lone shootout goal for the Hawks.

Ethan Morrow earned the win in net for the Bears, while Ruddy Brett took the loss.

Ott, Brett and Booth were named the game’s three stars. The game drew 153 fans.

Smiths Falls sits in a tie for fourth place with the Cornwall Colts at 53 points, one ahead of Kemptville and three ahead of Pembroke. Rockland leads the league with 85 points on a 42-6-1 record. Carleton Place and Navan are tied for second with 64 points each.

The Bears’ next home game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Kemptville.
