Boat slip revenue up as Rideau Lakes facility work continues

LAURIE WEIR

With all available slips leased for the 2025 season, Rideau Lakes Township has brought in more than $66,000 in harbour revenue — a modest but welcome increase over last year.

In a facilities report presented to the Municipal Services Committee on April 14, Steve Holmes, manager of facilities and parks, noted in his report that slip rentals at Portland and Newboro harbours totalled $66,497.11, up $2,198.98 from 2024.

Portland Harbour generated $13,173.54 from 11 leased slips, including one new lease on a previously vacant slip. All 10 returning boaters renewed for the season. Meanwhile, Newboro Harbour brought in $53,323.57, with 44 of 46 slips occupied — the same as last year. Slips 14 and 15 remain vacant.

Slip fees increased slightly in 2025, with the cost per foot now $65.54, up from $64.41. Seasonal parking also rose to $245.21 from $240.69.

Waitlists remain active for both harbours. Fourteen names were on the 2025 Portland list, with eight moved forward to 2026 after declining or being unreachable. The Newboro waitlist was also updated as of April 7.

In addition to the harbour update, Holmes detailed ongoing facility repairs and upgrades across the township. This included water system maintenance, floor refinishing, and preparing public buildings for spring operations. Council received the report for information.

Among the highlights:

  • Portland Hall and Library still has several items to complete before it can receive full occupancy, including grading and door repairs.
  • Chantry office renovations are moving forward, with 66 per cent of working drawings completed and site plan control underway.
  • North Crosby Hall required full water treatment system replacement, with a Canadian-made VIQUA system installed for $4,688.65 — significantly cheaper than an American alternative.
  • Water system repairs were made at six township buildings after inspections found long-standing maintenance issues.

Holmes noted several other spring tasks underway, including dead tree removal, site cleanup, and preparations for grass cutting. Seasonal decorations have also been swapped, and the welcome sign for Delta will be installed ahead of the Maple Syrup Festival.
