Carleton Place turns down town-home proposal

At Carleton Place council’s committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, August 10th, the town’s director of development services, Niki Dwyer, brought forward an application from Cavanaugh Development to create 7 new town-homes on Taber Street in the town’s south-west region. The proposal would see the 3-story walk-ups built in two separate blocks; one with five units and another with two. They would be serviced by a private lane and located next to town-homes already under construction.

Dwyer took the position that the application should be denied because the residences were higher than other homes and weren’t compatible with the neighbourhood. She reported that staff had tried to get the applicant to reduce the number of units to five without success. Councilor Wes Parsons doubted that the included garages would end up housing vehicles as they’re usually used for household goods and items storage. And with a private lane with no room for on-street parking, accommodating resident’s vehicles as well as visitors would be extremely problematic. Councilor Jeff Atkinson expressed concern about emergency vehicle access, especially in winter. In the end, the committee voted unanimously to deny the application.

Municipal pool and arena ice users will face a 3% increase in fees beginning September 6th. Joanne Henderson, the town’s manager of recreation and culture reported the increases were in line with cost of living increases.

A new fee schedule was created for for-profit refreshment vehicles operating at special events for only one or a few days at a time. The fee was set at $75.00 and wouldn’t apply to non-profit organizations as they are often asked to assist at local events and use the proceeds to help fund their mandated functions. Examples include BBQs and refreshments sold by the Civitan and People First at local events.
