Covid-19 Affects poppy sales, Remembrance Day ceremony

On Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting, Mayor Fenik announced that the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign in the town of Perth will take place from October 30 to November 11.  This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, Veterans will not be found around town with poppy boxes; however, if you wish to get your poppy from a veteran and say thank you, there will be two drive-through donation opportunities at the Perth Legion, Branch 244, this Saturday and next. Poppies will be available from 10am-5pm, Saturday October 30 and Saturday November 7.  Countertop poppy boxes will also be placed at local retailers, so there are plenty of opportunities to support veterans and honour their sacrifice by wearing a poppy this November.

Mayor Fenik also reminded Council that the public Remembrance Day ceremony is cancelled in order to guard health and safety against the second wave of Covid-19. There will be a private ceremony.  Councillor Bird wondered if it might be possible to sound the Last Post from the Town Hall on Remembrance Day, as a way for citizens to mark the solemn moment. The Mayor said this was a great idea, and will look into it.

We at Hometown News would also like to thank our Veterans for their service.
