Covid-19 numbers on the rise; booster shots available

Fire Chief Chesebrough shared a pandemic update from the Emergency Control Group with council during Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting in Smiths Falls.

Chief Chesebrough noted that anyone aged 18 and over is now eligible for the Covid-19 booster shot. The shot may only be given to individuals who received their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine at least 3 months ago.

Looking ahead to the end of Christmas break, rapid antigen tests have been provided to schools and students as well as major employers. Schools and large workplaces have distributed take-home rapid antigen tests for students and employees to test for Covid-19 at home before returning to school or work, in order to reduce the number of cases spread after potential holiday socializing.

In Kingston/Frontenac/Lennox and Addington, there are 1574 active cases of Covid-19. Due to the sudden increase and high numbers, that health unit has mandated indoor gatherings be further limited to 5 people per household.

In Lanark, Leeds, and Grenville, there are currently 168 active cases of Covid-19; the local death toll remains at 65. The Emergency Control Group discussed the possibility of closing town facilities, but has decided we will remain as we are today. They will continue to monitor the situation over the next few weeks, and will adjust restrictions as required.

Canada’s national death toll has topped 30,000 deaths from Covid-19.
