Fairview Manor participates in safe medication study

At Fairview Manor, resident safety is a priority. When it comes to dispensing medication, developing and monitoring the distribution process is vital. Fairview Manor is proud to be one of 20 long-term care homes across Ontario to participate in the review of an online self-assessment tool to support medication safety.

The study is being led by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Canada. Over a two-week period, Fairview Manor team members provided input on more than 50 pages of assessment material for the draft tool. The goal was to identify vulnerabilities in medication systems that can be improved to help make care systems safer for residents. The review looked at everything from medication storage to how residents and families are involved in their care.

“We believe it’s important to be involved in this type of validation testing, so we were happy to sign up,” explains Amanda Becking, Assistant Director of Care. “Helping to evaluate this type of tool gives us the opportunity to share our ideas about what we feel are important aspects of medication safety. Despite the pandemic, we must continue with our regular daily work of keeping residents safe. This project was one way to accomplish this.”
