Help fill a stocking for a senior

Sarah Dodgson says they never turn gifts away at this time of year when it comes to filling stockings for seniors.

“Seniors have done a lot for us,” she adds, “and they’re often the ones left behind.”

Last year CPHC filled 150 stockings. “We’d love to fill 150 more this year. But even if there are only 20…” she hesitates, quickly adding that looking at donations so far there will be a lot more than 20.

Sarah is a Community Relations officer with the Senior Support Services of Community and Primary Health Care (CPHC). Stockings are delivered primarily to seniors in Leeds and Grenville, seniors that CPHC is helping stay in their homes as long as possible.

“We deliver the week before Christmas,” she adds, repeating they never turn gifts away. If stuck for what to give, the best thing, she says, is to use your own creativity…give the unexpected. But, if stuck, here are a few suggestions: personal care items, gift cards, anything knitted, candies and chocolates (which are the favourite, Sarah laughs), puzzles, books and games, or even donating the stocking itself — filled or unfilled (CPHC will fill it).

Clients range in age from 65 to 100 and often include those who use the Lifeline button, those who participate in CPHC’s exercise and fall prevention classes and those who need stroke support.

“Whatever is donated,” Sarah says, “will find the right person.” The deadline for donations is just next week — December 8. If you’d like to give, here’s how to do it: call or email Kim Ducharme and she’ll arrange a time and place in Smiths Falls. Her number is 1-800-465-7646, ext. 2303; her email is kducharme@cphcare.ca.

“Christmas is an exciting time of year,” Sarah says, ”…but can often be lonely. So if you have a grandma or grandpa, or elderly aunt or uncle, keep them in  mind and help fill a stocking.
