Several Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are being praised for entering the fast-flowing Mississippi River in Carleton Place to bring a young woman to safety.

It happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. on April 9, 2024. A young person in crisis had jumped into the river near Maple Lane. The OPP Mobile Crisis Response Team and other officers responded to the scene, along with members of the Carleton Place Fire Department.

Three officers waded chest-deep into the strong current to bring the young woman to safety. All were fine after the incident.

The young woman was transported to hospital by Lanark County paramedics.

“Thank you to these officers who, without hesitation, bravely took action to ensure this person’s safety.” – Inspector Kerlous Tawdrous, Lanark Detachment Commander
