Road construction “progressing very well”

Smiths Falls’ Chief Administrative Officer Malcolm Morris shared an update on road construction with council during Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Morris related that the work at the Lombard Street and Abbott Street intersection is going well, “a lot of the heavy lifting is done on that project.” Sidewalks and landscaping are being wrapped up this week. This will lead to the next phase of the project, the work on the street’s surface itself. Morris told council “the plan is to begin milling the asphalt tomorrow [Tuesday].”  The asphalt is intended to be laid next week, with line painting on July 30th.  The month of August will see D-Squared busy on Cornelia Street while we enjoy the fresh intersection at Lombard and Abbott Street.

“Things are progressing very well despite rainy days,” Morris shared. “With any luck they’ll be out of there by the end of July and then move on to Cornelia Street after that.”

Regarding the Beckwith Street North and North Elmsley intersection, Morris reported that design firm Morrison Hershfield has almost completed the redesign following council’s direction. They will be submitting the completed design and cost estimate this week.

Morris noted that the project could potentially be tendered in August, with work beginning sometime in October.
