The Town of Smiths Falls has launched its annual business survey for the third consecutive year, introducing an innovative approach to data collection.

The annual survey program serves as a vital tool for gathering economic data and insights from local businesses while fostering connections and relationships with entrepreneurs. The collected data helps stakeholders develop tailored programs and services to tackle local challenges.

This year’s survey will contribute to the formulation of a new Smiths Falls Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) and Investment Attraction Strategy slated for later in the year.

“Small business is the backbone of our community’s prosperity and sustainability, collectively serving as our largest employer,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “Our town councils have consistently recognized the importance of empowering and supporting our small business community, with New Business Attraction being one of the key priorities in our 2023-26 Strategic Plan.”

The expanded BR&E survey, developed in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), will be facilitated through a partnership with the Smiths Falls and District Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Advisory Centre (Smiths Falls/Lanark County/Leeds Grenville), Valley Heartland CFDC, and the Smiths Falls Downtown Business Association.

“As our town evolves, it’s imperative that we actively engage with the business community to understand their challenges, enabling us to provide support now and explore future opportunities to diversify our sector base,” noted Julia Crowder, Economic Development & Tourism Manager for Smiths Falls. “We are committed to maintaining our community’s prosperity, facilitating growth, and ensuring a diverse range of local products and services for residents and visitors.”

All businesses within Smiths Falls are encouraged to participate in the survey. Increased responses will offer a comprehensive overview, enabling the town to formulate a robust strategy for business support and attraction over the next five years.

The survey is accessible online at www.smithsfalls.ca/BusinessSurvey. Business owners also have the option to arrange one-on-one meetings, either in person, virtually, or via phone, with survey partners by contacting Crowder at jcrowder@smithsfalls.ca or 613-283-4124 x 1107.
