Smiths Falls council backs buy-Canadian initiative

SUBMITTED

Where appropriate, buy local.

That was the message from Smiths Falls council on Monday, March 3 when they passed a resolution endorsing the federal and provincial call to buy Canadian.

As part of the approved resolution, council is also urging the federal and provincial governments to collaborate with municipalities to protect Canadian consumers and businesses and eliminate barriers that prevent municipalities from prioritizing Canadian companies for projects.

“I encourage all residents of Smiths Falls and the surrounding area to support our Canadian businesses by opting for Canadian-made products and services. Now more than ever, this is crucial for building resilience, sustaining jobs, strengthening our economy and protecting our sovereignty,” Mayor Shawn Pankow said.

The town will take existing trade agreement guidance from the federal and provincial governments to alter purchasing policies in a way that prioritizes Canadian vendors and suppliers whenever possible. The town is committed to supporting Canadian businesses.

The “Local Eats” campaign, relaunched in January, encourages residents and visitors to dine at local food establishments. The “Getting Thrifty in Smiths Falls” guide, developed in partnership with the chamber and DBA, promotes local shopping.

“We developed these campaigns to spark interest in discovering the amazing dining and shopping options we have in Smiths Falls and to support local businesses,” said Julia Crowder, manager of economic development and tourism. “These are just a few of many shop-local initiatives developed over the years to showcase just how much we have to offer here in our own backyard.”

The town urges residents to come together to support local businesses while also educating themselves on how to shop and buy Canadian. Resources such as cira.ca and downloadable apps like Shop Canadian, Buy Beaver or O SCANada can help consumers identify the origin of commonly used products.

By shopping locally and nationally, residents help strengthen the community and ensure its growth and prosperity.
