Smiths Falls will vote via telephone, internet, for municipal election

Kerry Costello, Director of Corporate Services in Smiths Falls, took a moment during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday night to encourage residents to contact town hall to ensure they are on the voters list.

The upcoming municipal election will see voting held via telephone and online.

Costello noted that voter information letters will be mailed out in late September and early October.

This year, there will be a ten-day voting window from October 14 to October 24. Help will be available at the town hall for anyone who needs help voting or registering to vote. Additionally, the town hall will be open Saturday Oct 22 from 8am-noon, to offer help to those who are unable to come to the town hall through the week.

Costello also said that town staff will be visiting seniors homes to make sure seniors have the opportunity to vote.

“Given the turmoil we’ve had with the website over the past couple of months, are members of the community best directed to Speak Up Smiths Falls, or to the town’s official website?” asked Councilor Niki Dwyer, referring to a recent hacking issue which had blocked the town’s website from being accessed. Speak Up Smiths Falls, the town’s survey and feedback platform, has done double duty as town website in the interim.

Costello assured council that the official town website will be good to go: “staff just got access to the website this afternoon; we will be updating and trying to move everything over to our official town website.”

Voting will continue until 10pm on October 24.
