Smiths Falls Police tackle crime with multiple arrests in ongoing theft and IPV investigations

Two arrested after shoplift investigation

On April 9th, 2025, the Smiths Falls Police Service received information of a theft that just took place at a local business. Members of Smiths Falls Police Service responded to the scene and commenced the investigation. Two suspects were later identified with the assistance of video surveillance footage.

On April 16th, 2025, with the assistance of Gananoque Police Service, the suspects in question were located and arrested without incident. 37-year-old Ashley GARRAH and 33-year-old Tyler RANDALL of Gananoque have each been charged with theft under $5000 (x1). The accused parties were later released with conditions and scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Wanted female arrested and charged

On April 12th, 2025, the Smiths Falls Police received information that a wanted female was observed walking in a residential area. Members of the Smiths Falls Police responded to the area and located and arrested the female on the strength of an outstanding warrant. Further investigation revealed that the female was also in breach of intimate partner violence-related court orders.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old female from Ottawa is charged with breach of recognizance (x2) and failing to comply with probation order (x2). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.

Wanted male arrested and facing additional IPV charges

On April 16th, 2025, at approximately 6 p.m., members of the Smiths Falls Police responded to a residential area after receiving information of a wanted male in the area. At approximately 6:25 p.m., the male was located on Brockville Street and arrested without incident. Further investigation led to 9 additional charges being laid in relation to intimate partner violence allegations.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old male from Smiths Falls is charged with assault (x2), mischief (x1), and failing to comply with their probation order (x6). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.

Harassment charge laid

On April 15th, 2025, the Smiths Falls Police Service began an investigation into complaints of harassment in relation to intimate partner violence.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old female youth was arrested and charged with criminal harassment – repeatedly communicate (x1). The accused was held pending a bail court hearing.

One arrested in mischief investigation

On April 17th, 2025, a member of the Smiths Falls Police Service was on a proactive patrol of the downtown core when a wanted male was observed. An arrest was made without incident.

59-year-old Vernon WATTS of Smiths Falls was arrested on a warrant stemming from a February 22nd, 2025 investigation of theft from a commercial dwelling. The accused stands charged with mischief under $5000 (x1) and theft under $5000 (x1). The accused was later released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Suspicious person complaint leads to arrest

On April 18th, 2025, the Smiths Falls Police received information of a person acting suspicious in the downtown core. Members of Smiths Falls Police responded to the area to commence the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, 35-year-old Caleb BENNETT was found in violation of their court-ordered house arrest. The accused stands charged with breach of their conditional sentence order (x3), failing to comply with their probation order (x4), and possession of a Schedule I substance (x1). The accused was held in custody pending a bail court hearing.

The charges in these matters have not been proven in court.
