Suspicious package at Smiths Falls Library found to be harmless security alarm

On Saturday November 23rd 2024, at approximately 2:30 pm members of Smiths Falls  Police Service were called out the Smiths Falls Library (Russell St East location) to  investigate a report from the public of a suspicious package.  

Upon investigation a suspicious device was located on the steps of the Smiths Falls Library entrance. Under an abundance of caution police evacuated the area. 

Smiths Falls Police with the assistance of the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit continued the  investigation and successfully removed the device. The device has since been determined  to a discarded merchandise security alarm. 

The area of evacuation has since be reopened and occupants can safely return to their  residences.
