Springtime updates from Smiths Falls Library, RMEO

Councilor Lorraine Allen shared updates with council from the Smiths Falls library and the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario (RMEO) during Tuesday evening’s council meeting.

RMEO held a special holiday event on Saturday, the Easter Egg-spress, during which the museum welcomed over 600 visitors. There was a petting zoo “which was very well received; most of the animals were babies,” Councilor Allen explained. Allen thanked all the volunteers who made the day a success. Katie and David Hoffman gave tours of the dining car, Chief Conductor John Mulcairns was dressed as Peter Cottontail, and both Jen Brown and Kathy Botham took photographs.

The head librarian reports an increase in in-person visits to the library since Covid restrictions have eased. New eavestroughing has been installed on the historic Carnegie library “and it looks beautiful,” added Allen. As for upcoming projects, “we have plans for a new staff room in the basement level, and we’re going to invest in consistent signage throughout the library.”  The Friends of the Library will be holding their annual book sale on June 18 at Victoria Park.

The library will continue to be operating at its regular hours during Phase 2 of Beckwith Reconstruction.
