Honouring the women of Hometown News on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8, is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. But beyond recognition, it’s a call to action—a reminder that the fight for gender equality is ongoing.

The Origins of International Women’s Day

The roots of IWD stretch back to the early 20th century, when women across Europe and North America were organizing for better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights. The first official National Women’s Day was observed in the United States in 1909, inspired by a garment workers’ strike in New York City. The movement gained momentum internationally, and in 1911, the first International Women’s Day was marked in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

Over time, IWD became a global movement. The United Nations officially recognized the day in 1975, declaring it a time to reflect on progress, call for change, and celebrate the achievements of women across industries and communities. Today, it’s observed in more than 100 countries, with themes that address challenges such as workplace equality, access to education, and representation in leadership.

According to global media studies, women are still underrepresented in leadership roles across the industry, and female journalists continue to face barriers ranging from pay inequality to online harassment.

By highlighting the contributions of women in media, we help pave the way for the next generation of female journalists, editors, and media entrepreneurs. At Hometown News, we’re proud to be part of a profession that gives women a platform to inform, inspire, and create meaningful change.
