The search is continuing for a missing person, south of Smiths Falls.

On May 2, 2020, shortly after 8:15 p.m. members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report that a canoe had capsized on a local waterway in the area of Jasper Road and McCaw Road, with one person missing.

Two people were out fishing in the canoe when it capsized. One person made it to shore and called the OPP from a nearby home. The Smiths Falls and Rideau Lakes Township Fire Departments attended the scene with their boats to conduct a search, assisted by a military helicopter from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton and members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT).

The missing person is a 38 year old man from South Elmsley Township.

The search is continuing this morning, assisted by an OPP helicopter, OPP Marine Unit and Smiths Falls Fire Department Boat.
