Director of Community Services Art Manhire informed the Committee of the Whole in Smiths Falls on Monday night that new basketball courts were installed in Lower Reach park last weekend and have seen lots of use.

Councillor Brennan commented “they look great and it’s a great addition to lower reach. Whenever I’m down there there’s someone using [the court], it doesn’t matter what time, day or night.”

Councillor Dwyer agreed, noting that she, too, has seen the courts in constant use. “The basketball courts are probably the most utilized park spaces in town right now. When you produce assets that kids are proud of, they will take care of it and behave respectfully. This causes that sense of pride to swell – I hope we can continue with our mandate to improve all of our parks. It’s a great asset, and everyone is really proud to see that project done.”

Director Manhire also relayed that Community Services has completed the installation of benches along the Centennial Park side of the basin. Manhire continues to seek approval from Parks Canada to install other benches in other locations, and will update when and if permissions come in.
