Budget set to go

At Tuesday, February 7^th’s committee of the whole meeting for Carleton Place council, town treasurer Trisa McConkey ran through the final version of the 2023 budget and its impact on property taxes. Council is proposing a 2.29% levy increase which represents an increase of $46.99, or $3.92 per month, based on a home assessed at $289,000 which is the median home value in Carleton Place for 2022. This puts Carleton Place cheaper, in terms of property taxes, than Perth and Smiths Falls in addition to other communities such as Arnprior, Gananoque, and Renfrew.

The public will have the opportunity to provide input on the proposed levy increase until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14th, 2023 and the budget presentation is on the town’s website at carletonplace.ca.

Development services report card presented

Niki Dwyer, the town’s director of development services presented her department’s activity report for 2022 to council. She started off by reminding everyone that Lanark County assigns population projections to lower-tier municipalities for adoption in their planning documents. In 2018, the County allocated a forecasted growth to Carleton Place of 97% by 2038 which will increase the total population of the Town to 20,964, or approximately 8,735 households. This equates to an annual growth of 3% per year, or 215 homes per year.

2022 saw the construction of 156 new dwelling units in town representing a 26% decrease in the number of new units compared to 2021, which similarly saw a 34% decrease from 2020. The majority of these units represented townhome dwellings reflecting 52% of the total number of new units.
