During Monday evening’s town council meeting in Smiths Falls, Mayor Shawn Pankow noted two special weeks that are being observed in May: Police Week and National Accessibility Week.

Police Week is being celebrated in Smiths Falls this week, May 14-20. Police week is a way for police to connect to the community and bring awareness of the services they provide, as well as thanking and honouring police workers, 911 communicators, and civilian staff.

Mayor Pankow commended Smiths Falls police service, which has been in operation since 1887, for working hard to deter criminal activity, ensure road safety, protect vulnerable members of the community, and more.

To commemorate Police Week, Smiths Falls Police Service will be holding two community events. On Wednesday from 11am-1pm, have Coffee with a Cop at Starbucks; and on Friday at 11:30am, pop by the police station on Air Care Drive for a community barbecue.

Thank you to all police workers for serving our town!

National Accessibility Week runs from May 28 – June 3. It is an opportunity to promote inclusion and open the discussion about barriers to facilities, public spaces, and daily life. Many Ontarians live with disabilities, and are impacted daily by physical and invisible barriers, Mayor Pankow pointed out, noting that increased accessibility and inclusion benefit everyone.

“I encourage everyone to support equality of access,” Pankow said.
