During Monday evening’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Chief Administrative Officer Malcolm Morris shared some encouraging news with the town of Smiths Falls.

The Transportation Association of Canada recently awarded the Small Municipality Achievement Award for innovative works to Smiths Falls, specifically for the revitalization of Beckwith Street (Phase 1). This award was announced a while ago, Morris explained, but the award ceremony was held last Thursday. Morris attended virtually, along with the town’s Engineering Technologist Vanessa Bernicky. The second-place finalist which was beat out by Smiths Falls was the tourist town of Banff, Alberta.

In Banff, Morris said, “they removed traffic, took out asphalt, created an interlocking stone street,” and created a European-style town square. “Smiths Falls can be exceptionally proud that we won against that type of competition.”

Beckwith Revitalization Phase 2 is underway and the work is running on schedule. We should have a fully completed, revitalized Beckwith St before October 2022.
