Stephanie Clark, the new Director of Community Services with the town of Smiths Falls, gave a report to council during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday night.

This month is the last chance to lace up your skates at the community centre until autumn. “The ice is coming out in the community centre at the end of this month, so there will be no more hockey or public skating until the season begins again in the fall.”

Director Clark also noted that Community Service crews have been busy preparing parks and green space for spring and summer use. “There’s lots of planting and activity happening out there.”

Her final update is one that has been eagerly awaited: the playground equipment that was purchased last year will be installed this year, by “mid-June at the latest.” The equipment will be installed in Hyland-Corbett and Victoria Park simultaneously. The removal of the decrepit structure in Victoria Park is imminent: “we’re hoping to start that this week. It is boarded up, but we did notice that there were some children playing on it so we’d like to take it down and just get it out of the way and make sure that it’s not a safety risk for anyone in the community.”

Julia Crowder, Manager of Economic Development, said that the welcome centre in Victoria Park is intended to be opened after the long weekend in May (May 20-21).

Council thanked Clark for her updates, and welcomed her aboard.
