This is us…

Since 1912, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been providing life changing individual and group mentoring relationships amongst adults and youth. One to one mentoring provides youth with a role model to talk to and share common interests supported by experienced case workers. Group mentoring programs Go Girls! and Game On! (for boys) focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. Jumpstart After School Program supported by Canadian Tire charities providesactive safe and supportive environment for children to develop and enhance a healthy life style through physical activity, fair play and fun.

In 2005, the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters faced some tough financial decisions. Bingo revenues were dwindling and they were running out of energy for fundraising events. The agency needed a new source of dependable revenue. Board member Jewel Purdon had the answer – a second hand clothing store!

The first Jewel’s Gently Used Clothing Store was opened in Smiths Falls with a paid store manager and a number of dedicated volunteers. After much trial and error, the store began to thrive, and in 2008 moved to 18 William St. E. with the purchase of the agency’s own building.

In 2010, a second location was opened in Perth. Opening a second store helped bring in even more revenue, but also allowed the agency to have a part time office located at 48 Wilson St. West.

A third Jewel’s store opened July 2019 in Carleton Place at 210 Bridge Street.  Big Brothers Big Sisters partnered with Community Living of Lanark who operates Foundry Books and Novelties in the same building on Bridge Street. Our community supports both stores by donating used books and gently used clothing and becoming frequent customers.

This Is Us…shopping locally, recycling, reusing, donating and volunteering. We get involved and support programs within Lanark County making us a great community.
