CARLETON PLACE — The Ontario government is investing $41.1 million to build two new French-language schools in Carleton Place as part of a provincewide school construction announcement aimed at addressing growth and expanding childcare access.

According to a provincial media release issued May 13, the funding will support the construction of a new French public elementary school and a new French Catholic intermediate and secondary school in the growing community. Together, the projects will create 590 student spaces and 122 licensed childcare spaces.

“This is great news for the growing community of Carleton Place,” said Lanark—Frontenac—Kingston MPP John Jordan in the release. “Through these investments, we’re creating opportunities for students to thrive well into the future and to ensure that families that move into Carleton Place and surrounding areas have more opportunities for quality education, close to home.”

The province said the funding is part of a broader $1.6 billion investment supporting 79 school construction projects across Ontario, creating more than 29,000 student spaces and nearly 2,000 childcare spaces.

According to the release, the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario will receive $16.7 million for École élémentaire publique Carleton Place, which will include 268 elementary student spaces and 73 childcare spaces.

The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est will receive $24.4 million for École catholique 7-12 Carleton Place, which will provide 322 intermediate and secondary student spaces along with 49 childcare spaces.

Both schools will be built on sites that are still to be acquired.

Education Minister Paul Calandra said in the release that the province is focused on ensuring students have access to modern learning environments while improving oversight and accountability in school construction projects.

Board officials also welcomed the announcement, calling it an important step for the growth of French-language education in the region.
