PAWsitive Voices event brought UCDSB students to CPHS for leadership activities and school tours
Carleton Place High School hosted a student-led event May 19 that welcomed students from surrounding Upper Canada District School Board elementary schools to promote student voice, leadership and collaboration.
The event, called PAWsitive Voices, gave participants an opportunity to share leadership initiatives taking place within their schools, connect with peers from across the region and participate in discussions and activities.
Participants also toured the school, asked questions about high school life and received event T-shirts designed to commemorate the day.
CPHS student leaders acted as liaisons throughout the event, sharing information about life at the school and highlighting the importance of school spirit, extracurricular involvement and positive relationships with staff and fellow students.
Elementary schools also presented their own leadership initiatives.
Caldwell Street Public School discussed clubs and supports intended to help students feel included, including its “Stray Kids” club, which helps connect students seeking friendship or support.
Arklan Community Public School highlighted its clubs and spirit days, emphasizing fundraisers and assemblies aimed at amplifying student voice.
Students from Beckwith Public School discussed their Ronald McDonald House fundraiser and plans for assemblies focused on mental health and student well-being.
CPHS students later joined elementary students in small groups for an “Ask a High Schooler” question-and-answer session designed to ease concerns about transitioning to high school.
Community partners also shared information and resources throughout the event.
Representatives from Open Doors for Lanark Children and Youth and UCDSB mental health lead Lisa Livingston spoke about mental health supports and services available to students.
Representatives from Planet Youth also led a trivia activity focused on healthy sleep routines.
The event concluded with tours of intermediate division clubs and classrooms, along with a rock performance by the Music for Creating class. Students also received custom T-shirts designed by the school’s Communications Technology class.
