Free seeds and a spring workshop highlight the annual Seed Library program
PERTH — The Perth & District Library has opened its annual Seed Library, a spring initiative aimed at encouraging local food production and community participation.
The program allows residents to borrow packets of seeds at no cost for use in their home gardens. Participants are encouraged to harvest seeds at the end of the growing season and return a portion to the library in the fall to help sustain the collection.
“The seed library is one of the library programs I enjoy most each year,” said Emily Fournier, Library Specialist at the Perth & District Library. “Planning my garden gets me through the last few weeks of winter, and collecting seeds for the library at the end of the summer has become a fun and educational activity for our whole family.”
In addition to the lending program, the library will host a workshop for those interested in learning more about seed harvesting. Seed Saving for the Home Gardener is scheduled for April 21 at 5:30 p.m. The session will be led by Maureen Bostock, a retired market gardener who previously operated Sweet Meadow Farm in Balderson with her partner, Elizabeth. The workshop will cover the principles and methods of seed saving, as well as information about pollinators.
The Seed Library is located on the main floor of the Perth & District Library and is available during regular library hours while supplies last.
