Perth Sports Hall of Fame ceremony set for May 24 with free admission and livestream

PERTH — The Perth & District Sports Hall of Fame has announced its 2026 class of inductees, recognizing four individuals and one team for their contributions to sport at the local, national and international levels.

The group will be honoured during the Coldwell Banker Settlement Realty 8th annual induction ceremony on May 24 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244 in Perth.

Leading this year’s class is Nick Tritton, a standout in judo who competed at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. Tritton was a longtime member of Canada’s national team and earned multiple medals at national and international competitions, including gold at the Canadian championships and podium finishes at the Pan American Games and Pan American Judo Championships.

In hockey, Gary Mahon is being recognized for a career that spanned junior, university and senior levels. Mahon played for teams including the Oshawa Generals, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and Queen’s Golden Gaels, along with local squads such as the Perth Blue Wings and Smiths Falls Rideaus. He was previously inducted into the Perth Blue Wings Hall of Fame in 1999.

Builder honours go to David Thompson for his decades-long impact on figure skating in the region. Thompson founded the Spirit of Skating Award in 1991, recognizing skaters for dedication, work ethic and character. He also coached extensively in Lanark County and Ottawa-area clubs, helping athletes reach gold-level dance tests and supporting skaters as a volunteer dance partner.

Also recognized in the builder category is Albert Lyon, a key figure in the development of lacrosse in Canada. Lyon held leadership roles at the provincial and national levels, including president of the Canadian Amateur Lacrosse Association. He played a role in shaping the modern game, including drafting rules for box lacrosse and overseeing its transition from field to indoor play.

The Perth Blue Wings Midget A 2001-02 team will also be inducted. The squad captured an Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial gold medal during the 1999-2000 season.

The induction ceremony is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. Admission is free, with donations accepted. Refreshments will follow the ceremony, which will be emceed by Dave White and livestreamed by Sx2 Productions on the hall of fame’s Facebook page.

Organizers say the event offers the community a chance to celebrate the accomplishments and lasting impact of athletes, builders and teams who have helped shape sport in Perth and the surrounding area.
