Jodi Empey, the first woman to lead the Smiths Falls Police Service, joined the force in 1994
SMITHS FALLS — Police Chief Jodi Empey has announced plans to retire from the Smiths Falls Police Service effective Dec. 31, 2026, bringing to a close a policing career spanning more than 32 years.
Empey began her career with the service in 1994 as a recruit and steadily rose through the ranks. She was appointed deputy chief in 2022, later served as acting chief, and was officially named chief in July 2024, becoming the first woman to lead the service.
Throughout her career, Empey was known for her commitment to community policing, leadership within the organization and strong relationships with community partners.
“Chief Empey’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the community have been invaluable to the Smiths Falls Police Service,” said Chris Saumure, chair of the Smiths Falls Police Services Board.
“Her decades of service, including breaking barriers as the first female chief of police in Smiths Falls, have helped shape the organization into what it is today. On behalf of the board and the community, we thank Chief Empey for her years of dedication and wish her all the best in her well-earned retirement.”
Empey said serving the community over the past three decades has been an honour.
“I am extremely proud of the members of the Smiths Falls Police Service and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated individuals throughout my career,” she said. “Serving this community has been a privilege, and I will always cherish the relationships and experiences gained along the way.”
The police services board said planning for the leadership transition and recruitment process will begin in the coming months to ensure continuity within the service.
