The Smiths Falls Police Service have been dealing with an “active situation” on William Street East, between Market and Beckwith streets, this morning.

“For public safety, residents within this area are asked to stay inside until this matter is resolved,” they stated in a Facebook post June 26. “Members of the public are asked to stay out of the general area.”

Ontario Provincial Police were also on scene as backup.

Bill Dickson, media relations coordinator for East Region, told Hometown News that the incident is contained and there is believed to be no threat to public safety.

“People are being asked to avoid the area and those who are in the vicinity are asked to remain indoors to allow police to focus on the incident,” Dickson shared.

Tiffanie Pommerville was on her way to work – on William Street – when police started to put up barricades.

“My curiosity got the best of me and was standing on the sidewalk outside my place of work when the officers were telling people to get off the streets because they would be in the line of fire,” she shared with Hometown News.

“A few moments later you can hear the police yelling at someone to come out of the house slowly and walk towards them. After that I didn’t feel safe and decided to go back home.”

More information will be provided when it becomes available.
