REAL depaving and pollinating in Smiths Falls

Councillor Dwyer brought a report from the Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) to council during Monday night’s council meeting in Smiths Falls.

“More than 40 volunteers spent their Saturday in the heat and sun, ripping up the asphalt on Daniel Street,” she reported. Depaving the street was the first step in converting a small segment of Daniel Street into a park space and a town square. Along with a gazebo and gathering space, this park will include a pollinator garden.

REAL is requesting help with donations of pollinator plants: autumn fire sedum, turtle head, yarrow, spotted dead-nettle, painted daisies and trillium. If you have pollinators in your own garden to split and share, please contact Donna at REAL, (613) 283-7999.

REAL is holding its Annual General meeting July 14 via Zoom. Smiths Falls’ CAO Malcolm Morris will be the keynote speaker, discussing changes to the Blue Box program; all are welcome to attend.

The REAL Deal store is now open again for in-person shopping, Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
