The Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) is looking for volunteers to help make a local impact on an alarming world-wide problem.

Plastic garbage ending up in inland waterways then flowing out to sea is contributing to the spread of huge patches of plastic waste in the world’s oceans.

According to information provided by organizers of World Oceans Day, which was observed June 8, “Scientists believe 80 to 90 per cent of plastics entering our oceans come from land; while some is litter along our ocean beaches most plastics flow down our streams, creeks, lakes and rivers to our oceans.”

REAL is planning a day of shoreline cleanup along the Rideau River in Smiths Falls Saturday, Oct. 2.

The morning volunteer group will meet at 10 a.m. in the parking lot beside the bascule bridge.

The afternoon group will meet at 1p.m. at the boat launch parking area on Jasper Avenue just past the intersection with Eric Hutcheson Side Road. For more information and to volunteer, call 613-284-8338 or email jakeharriswilson@gmail.com.
